We know from over 20-years experience that it is easy to get A’s in law school. We also know from 20-years experience that you are under a lot of stress. You are not in control of your future and you have been uprooted from your prior routines and you are now faced with many new challenges. You have an intense desire to do well and you are spending a large amount of money. This produces stress in the form of severe anxiety. Many students abandon common sense and try to alleviate their anxieties by thinking that spending a lot of time studying, experimenting with a new magical formula of success simply because someone in authority used influence on them, or spending lots of money will produce the desired results. The vast majority of law students don’t do well in the first two semesters of law school because they simply bet on the wrong horse.
They listen to methods of learning which have no basis in reality and simply do not work. They listen to people in positions of authority telling them to abandon everything they know about learning because they are faced with this amazing new way of thinking; called thinking like a lawyer.
They buy thousands of dollars worth of materials thinking that they have discovered some magical formula and way of learning and explaining information that will produce the desired results. They are always raving about the new book or guide they bought or the lecture they just blew a hundred dollars on and how confident they feel that now they have discovered who, what, when, where and how. They are just simply lying to themselves and they are scared because they have no idea of what to do. They are suffering all the symptoms of severe stress and a lack of control over their lives. They have intense desires to do well but they have no idea of what to do to produce the desired results.
What they fail to see is that the publishers they are purchasing their materials from, make multiple copies of the same materials under different brand names and different authors all claiming to have the answers. How can you trust a company that merely wants to bilk you out of all the money they can get? A person who is under control and has not lost her common sense immediately can see that a company who sells 4 different contracts outlines from 4 different authors under four brand names all competing with each other on the shelf at their local law school bookstore knows that something is really wrong.
They listen to what professors tell them to do but do not understand that what a professor tells you to do is excellent advice but only for the idiomatic concepts in the law. Professors fail to tell their students that 90-95% of all the law that you need to know is capable of being learned by simply asking a question that non-law students and even Joe Six Pack can answer with absolutely no difficulty. Joe Six Pack is a mythical blue-collar worker whose only desire in life is to drink beer, win the lottery, and watch Monday Night Football. If Joe can answer most legal questions so can you.
They abandon their most precious asset of common sense and they are easy prey for social proofs and manipulation in an attempt to gain control of their future. They are unhappy, upset, broke, and very confused.
